Excellent reading, in this book you will see how a super intelligent kid have many more problems that a normal kid, everybody thinks that if a kid is very intelligent he or she has everything to be happy, but that is true? I have to tell you that this book has some parts that could been written better, but those things doesn't take any of the five stars that I gave. The book will keep you changing page after page, and at the end you will be able to answer my question: You think that the power can change you?

The story stringing gifted children, AI, and true feelings.

Having been actively interested in AI for many years, this book highlights the dream which many people are aiming for. Being able to put the human into the machine. Cleverly, Saul manages to highlight the negative aspects, and the immoral side. Overall the characters are very well defined, and lifelike. Situations such as the sabotage of the braking system of a car via computer are real life possibilities, as well as the majority of that which is in the book. The book also cleverly highlights the loneliness of many gifted children, or those who feel they are different because of their intelligence. These feelings of alienation also lead (in the story) into being integrated into the computer, to escape the pain of physical life. Overall, an excellent read, definately one to make you think.
very interesting plot a little slow at times though

Shadows is a futuristic Grimms-like tale.

In Shadows, John Saul plays the vulnerability of the gifted child against a modern day mad scientist. The weaving of brilliant children, technology and obsession with power make this story a schematic tapestry of a futuristic Grimms-like fairy tale. Though the book has a slow start, it is well worth the wait as Saul takes the reader from the dusty town of Eden to the beautiful setting of the Barrington Academy, a private school for gifted children. But within the magnificence of the old mansion lie secret rooms and gory experiments. It's a thriller to the end, and will scare any parent with a gifted child into a few sleepless nights
